Moab's Feral Cat Program is supported by the Humane Society of Moab Valley, Moab City's Animal Control Officers, Moab City and Grand County and San Juan County. The program coordinator is Margaret Griffith, Humane Society Board Member.
In 2001, 90% of the stray cats picked up in Moab were euthanized. Thanks to the generous donations from No More Homeless Pets of Utah and HSMV, the euthanization rate for cats has dropped dramatically. In addition the program could not survive without the generosity of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary who donates 10,000lbs of dry cat food each year and the dedicated efforts of local volunteers who collect, distribute the food an maintain the cat colonies.
The "Trap, Neuter, Return" program is a statewide program that sterilizes feral cats, and returns them to their habitat, offering a low-cost and humane way to control and reduce the feral cat population. Moab's Feral Cat Program, working through HSMV maintains 34 cat colonies. These colonies are being cared for by compassionate people who often buy additional food with their own money.
Moab's Feral Cat Program can be used for stray cats as well! But, we need your help!
We need volunteers:
• to help trap cats and take them to the vet for spay/neuter
• to pick them up and keep them overnight during recovery
• to caretake a colony
• to deliver food to caretakers
We also need:
• cat food donations or money to buy food for the cat colonies
• money to help sponsor the feral cat spay/neuter program
Over 650 cats have been fixed using this program! That is a big impact!
